From THEGOODBOOKSTALL.org.uk, the following review by Mary Bartholomew:
Paul Hattaway has written an amazingly detailed history of Christianity in the Chinese province of Henan. At the start he sets the scene for us in his Introduction, then in Chapter One he outlines Geography: History: People: Language: Culture: Economy and the Henan Church. Chapter Two plunges us straight into surprises as he talks about the Chinese Jews, then on to the beginnings of Christianity there, when the Gospel was shared by Nestorian missionaries in AD635. By this time I was hooked! I read on although daunted by the number of pages to go, 333pages before the Summary figures, Maps & Tables and Bibliography. Paul Hattaway writes in a very easy to read style even when dealing with excruciatingly difficult subjects such as the torture and persecution of so many of the House Church Christians who refuse to have anything to do with the government run Three Self Church. Every aspect of church life is treated fairly and with as much accuracy as possible. The amount of research that has gone into this book is mind blowing, and the more people who can be persuaded to read it, the more we will understand the explosion of Faith that the Holy Spirit is bringing to China and this province in particular. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
