“The mysteries of life are hidden in the signs.”
The idyllic life of Alphabetania is starting to fracture. Secret letters and shocking accusations are causing the spread of unrest. The Alphabetanians begin to turn against each other and soon blood is shed for the first time ever in a completely innocent world. Will they be able to handle the truth concerning the power that is hidden in the signs?
In another reality the young author Louis Mackenzie is lost in thought. While the world crumbles around him, he follows the struggle in Alphabetania with and eagle eye – for their struggle is his struggle. In his hands he holds a pen.
This is the first book in the trilogy, Defenders of the Sign-an exciting and unique series of stories about love, treachery, faithfulness and courage.
This was an excellent book to read, held the imagination from the start, and very well written. My mother (in her 60’s) loved it, my 11 year old son who is a keen reader said the following: “it’s like Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia, gripping from beginning to end, never a dull moment, easy to read, action packed – one word – BRILLIANT. I can’t wait for the next one in the trilogy.” We all can’t!!
What I thought would be a fairly good book turned out to be an excellent read. The premise seemed simple and although the book seems to be written in a style that would suit teen to adult readers, I read on curious what would develop, and really liked the story within a story and the character development especially of the writer of the main story. The book is actually about an English high school boy during WWII who has a passion and skill with his pen. And this is not clear until well into the story of Alphabetania. There are lots of philosophical parallels to consider and it becomes a deep story that will challenge you to think about some really important things. Well done!
